Photographs from the Total Eclipse of July 11, 1991

by Richard Polatty

The following photos show the detail that is possible to obtain from simple equipment. These were both taken with a totally manual Nikon F2A with a 400mm f/6.3 lens on 125 ASA film with the exposures detailed below. In order to see the prominences of the sun, use short shutter speeds. Longer shutter speeds are needed for coronal photos. It is interesting to compare the two images. The ones below were taken seconds apart. Note the coronal hole where the solar prominence is. Also, note the arcing structure of the prominence to the upper right. The detail is much better in the original but this gives the idea!
